Human Values and Grand Challenges: SSAH Contributions to European Transformations and Resilience

Human Values and Challenges Conference
1–2 December 2025
Copenhagen, Denmark & online

EASSH Director, Gabi Lombardo, will be speaking on the panel "Addressing human values in mission-based, interdisciplinary research" at 10:40 CET on 01.12.25.

The conference is part of Denmark's Presidency of the Council of the European Union and is hosted by Aalborg University. The conference is organised in collaboration with University of Southern Denmark and Copenhagen Business School and supported by the European Commission.

European innovation, to be successful, must be based on human values, because human values reflect what people consider worthwhile in life. The goal of this conference is to generate momentum for a continued and increased inclusion of SSAH perspectives in the future of European research and innovation.

The conference has three bold objectives:

  1. Promote a shared vision for human-centric research and innovation for a more sustainable inclusive Europe
  2. Demonstrate why SSAH is essential to tackling Europe's grand societal challenges
  3. Support deeper integration of SSAH into future EU and national R&I strategies that inspire a lasting and systemic shift towards transdisciplinary research models that truly reflect the complex challenges of our age.

Registration is closed but you can follow the livestream here.

Beyond the Algorithm: From Research to Action for Democratic Renewal

Beyond the Algorithm: From Research to Action for Democratic Renewal
4 December 2025
Brussels, Belgium & online

EASSH Director, Gabi Lombardo, will be speaking on panel 3 "Democracy-centered Technology" at 14:00.

As the European Commission releases the 2026 Work Programme “Europe’s independence moment”, where the Union reaffirms its policy priorities and investments on democracy, sovereignty and innovation, the event 'Beyond the Algorithm: From Research to Action for Democratic Renewal' puts together an agenda where AI, Big Data, and democracy meet real-world policy and civic impact.

Hosted as a joint conference of the AI, Big Data & Democracy Task Force and EASSH – European Alliance for Social Sciences and Humanities, this gathering highlights how research-driven tools, ethical frameworks, and citizen-centred methods can strengthen democratic resilience, from misinformation and accountability to evidence-based governance and public trust.

Four Horizon Europe-funded projects, AI4GOV, KT4D, ITHACA, and ORBIS have joined forces to establish the AI, Big Data & Democracy Task Force. Together, these projects represent a broad, interdisciplinary effort to understand the benefits and risks of AI and Big Data for democracy and civic participation, and to develop solutions for their responsible and democratic use.

This event represents the climax of this collaborative journey, bringing together the research results, methodologies, and exhibiting tools produced by the Task Force, with the ambition to foster dialogue, impact policy, and contribute to the future of digital democracy.

Register now to join either in person or remotely.
